DARK HORSES – can Black Cats challenge?
Sunderland: the WSL2 New Season Preview for the Mackems, by playwright Ed Waugh

Head Coach: Melanie Reay, since 2017.
New signings: Rhiannon Roberts, Hannah Greenwood, Grace Moloney, Reanna Blades, Jamie Finn and Izzy Atkinson.
Outlook: Sunderland finished seventh out of 11 in the Women’s Championship last season, 13 points behind champions London City. Frustratingly, the Black Cats finished third in 2023-24, only missing out on promotion by five points.
Promotion is the realistic goal for Sunderland this campaign – and consistency is the key after an up-and-down season typified by four successive defeats before rallying to win the final two matches of the campaign.
Movements in the summer transfer window demonstrate how Melanie Reay has taken the need for serious reinforcements to heart.
It’s quite a coup to get Izzy Atkinson (above) from Crystal Palace. The addition of Welsh international defender Rhiannon Roberts is a terrific signing. Ex-Liverpool, Roberts comes to Wearside after a stint with Real Betis in Spain, bringing with her international and WSL experience as well as leadership qualities. Signing a top keeper, Irish international Grace Moloney, from London City Lionesses, will also help stabilise a defence that leaked 34 goals last season.
With Birmingham City, Charlton, Palace and, of course, local rivals Newcastle strengthening their squads significantly this summer, it’s hard to see the Mackems breaking through that wall. However, with exciting young players like Libbi McInnes, Katy Watson and Ellen Jones gaining vital experience, plus outstanding striker Eleanor Dale, Sunderland could be the dark horses in the promotion race. If they are consistent!
